Martial Law's 40th Anniversary and Cybercrime Law (Coincidence or Master Planned?)

We all know that today is the 40th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law (Proclamation No. 1081) placed on the entire country which was proclaimed by former President Ferdinand Marcos. It was simply an Iron Hand with full military power controlled by a single individual (In Tagalog, it was Batas Militar as I recall watching the movie Eskapo back in high school).

Well apparently some liked it but most were not. Most people who didn't like it were the first one who revolted from the dictatorship. I'll ask my mom if there is anyone from our family (up to the third degree) joined the revolution against Martial Law.

As far as I can remember, those days were considered the Dark Ages of Philippine History with a lot of killings, missing people never been found among others. I wasn't even born that time when Martial Law was declared not until the turn of the 1980's. And even when I was a little boy, I had no idea what was going on during those time until recently. I may even say I belong to the Martial Law babies as well :D.

Too bad, I missed this rally held at Mendiola early this morning as I need to go to work.

Moving forward, there is a new Martial Law cooking after the old one which involves millions of netizens after this plagiarism issue on the RH Bill.

I've been reading a few blogs about the new Cybercrime Law and it may target bloggers who would do cyber-bullying on a certain individual as the libel clause was already added.

So far, thirteen senators voted yes to the Senate Version on Third Reading of the Cybercrime Law (Loren Legarda, Francis Escudero, Gregorio Honasan II, Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, Pia Cayetano, Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., Jinggoy Ejercito-Estrada, Panfilo Lacson, Manuel “Lito” Lapid, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Ralph Recto, Vicente Sotto III, Manny Villar), nine has yet to make a vote and only one voted AGAINST it (Teofisto “TG” Guingona: Kudos to you Mr. Senator).

Swabeng Thoughts: This has been done in haste without consulting top technological experts (particularly in the internet and social media). This also violates freedom of expression (same with what Martial Law has done) as I can't imagine our freedom of expression after EDSA revolution may have gone up in smokes. Also Martial Law was passed on the 21st while Cybercrime Law on the 12th. Coincidence? Thank God that Nuffnangers like me still have hope after Country Manager Abe Olandres has already known this issue at hand.

Anyways, to know more about Cybercrime Law, you may check the links from Rappler, Raissa Robles, ABS-CBN News, Inquirer News, and The Official Gazette.

For now, lets expect the worst but do hope for the best.

  1. Martial Law indeed is something a Filipino wouldn't want to happen again specially whenever someone had thoughts of the Marcos dominion.

With regards to Cybercrime law, I believe that hastening of the said law made it really look like there's something behind it, let's just hope there really isn't anything behind it.

  2. Coincidence, eh? Some people don't believe in coincidences. But I can't say I'm one of such people. Still, there's no denying that the Cybercrime Law is something that might actually put a damper to Internet freedom of speech. I hope somebody in the Senate takes action to ask for a reconsideration or a repeal.

  3. Coincidence. Maybe it will be dark age of the internet too if this will progress. Hope our leaders will look into it more and study it well.

  4. Well.... they say history repeats itself. I hope not, especially in Martial Law's case. And I'm also doubt that's going to happen. I just think that the people behind this Cybercrime Law needs to reassess the provisions before PNoy gets to finally sign it

  5. Martial Law is a part of our history that we would rather not go back to except in school perhaps to study where we went wrong.

  6. Like what you said here, whenever people talk about Marcos' dominion they all have different opinions about his ruling or the Martial Law. At some point, Democracy in the Philippines is overly abused already which made me think if there was only a good ruler then I'll go for a Martial Law.

I think, Philippines is like a rebelling teenager who wants to explore on things and it's too young for democracy. We really need a good leader but looking back, there are no good rulers for our country because it is hard to please people nowadays. Some will be pleased and some won't.

About the cybercrime law, most likely PNoy had a complete trust on the people who made that law that is why he signed it immediately even without checking it, probably browsed it once only. Let's just hope for the best and not do anything against the law :)

  7. I got a lot of stories of Martial Law from my Dad. And my grandmother was also one of those women kidnapped and was abused. It scares me everytime I hear those stories. I just hope, our government will do their best not to let this happen again.

  8. Love the idea of posting the pros and cons of Martial law. Still, no matter how others would sanitize it, it was definitely one of the darkest moments of Philippine history

  9. I have been hearing different opinions about the Cybercrime law and somebody close to me is actually following it closer than I do. But if I am going to based my opinion about it based on the write-ups, blogs and Facebook updates I am seeing, it seems like more people do not favor this law as it does not seem to protect the basic rights of freedom of expression. It also does not help that the person who inserted the controversial addendum to the law is a person whose integrity is questioned most recently.

With so much noise about it, I just wonder what are we actually doing to resolve this? How come our government officials do not seem to take action?

I hope this does not turn out to be another one of those "forgive and forget" scenarios in politics.

  10. I think it is planned because nowadays there are online users who are abusive in posting their comments. But please implement the Cybercrime law to those irresponsible online users.
