This was supposed to be entered last January 11 of this year but since I had my interview then, I just drafted it first.
Actually, my wife was VERY hesitant to let me go to the event since throngs of people attend the event as their annual "panata" but I insisted and besides, I know my limit and where to shoot.
I meet up with my good friend Alex at almost 11:00am and the Image of the Black Nazareth was still somewhere within the Manila Hotel area. We positioned ourselves on top of the waiting shed to have a better view of the event. Then throngs of people gather up as the image of the Black Nazareth approaches our eyesight. We got a lot of pictures not just the image but also the people and the emotions as well. We spent at least 4 hours to be able to capture the stretch from Padre Burgos to Lawton. It was really exhausting and draining as well but it was all worth it.
Here are a few pictures I got during the event with a disability of AF functions of my camera (I shot the event in Manual Focus).
Prayer
Holding Tightly
Throng of People
It must have been a great challenge to shoot in this kind of situation.

Did you use zoom lens? Your photos are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSecond pictures is stunning!
ReplyDeleteI am not a Catholic so things such as this appears to me as hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteWhat I am trying to say is that the 10 Commandments told us clearly
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My Commandments.
From this point of view celebrating the fiesta and whatever celebrations pertaining to idolatry is against the Bible teachings :)
i like the symbolism the 1st photo evokes..
ReplyDeleteIve been wanting to witness this festival and hope one day I will! Very nice photos you got! Phew!
ReplyDeletei couldn't even dare squeeze in during the sinulog. i couldn't imagine more if dito na. :o
ReplyDeleteI also want to experience this - although I am not a Roman Catholic just for the sake of curiosity.
ReplyDeleteI think Lexxu has said what I wanted to say :))
But just want to add something... Kumusta naman ang buhay ng mga nagjoin dito after the event? Bumait or same lang? Haha.
andami n ng tao last Sinulog, pano pa ako makakahinga nite?
ReplyDeleteAng galing mo!!!! Buwis buhay at buwis gadgets diyan eh >__<
ReplyDeleteMay kirot sa puso yung unang photo ha..
natawa naman ko sa buwis gadgets. i'm not catholic so i don't really understand why people do this. pero grabeng panata ito para makipagsiksikan ka. =)
ReplyDeletemy dad used to go there when he was younger...pero now medyo di nya na kaya makipagsiksikan...but good for you. it's nice to believe in something and in the Higher Power...;)

I don't have the guts to go cover events like this. Grabe ang crowd! Di ko siguro ma-take ang sikip sa kapal ng tao at sikip sa puso (tulad nung first photo mo).
ReplyDeleteWow, props to you sir for even attempting to cover this. I've not yet been to the Black Nazarene Festival but I don't think I ever will. Parang di ko ata kakayanin. Sa TV pa lang natatakot na ko sa tulakan at siksikan.
ReplyDeleteI heard that the event this year was way better than the previous years...
ReplyDeleteI'm not a religious fanatic, so I can never understand the frenzy of these events/traditions..
I sure do know this...
This is a very good activity photography wise!
somehow, the crowd scares me of this festival.
ReplyDeletescared of stampede. good for you to find a strategic location to get those shots.
