Twenty-Eleven: The year that was

Twenty Eleven was a very significant year for me. A lot of things have happened that changed me for the rest of my life. Be it good or bad, twenty eleven proved to be a good and challenging year moving towards twenty twelve.

Anyway, instead of sharing what happened last year month after month, I’d give some significant details of what has happened last year.

1. The Arrival of Migmig: Everything has change the moment she was born. My wife who is not so affectionate towards me became so loving and caring all of a sudden. Same with me; almost all of my photoshoots were cancelled at the last minute to take care of our daughter while her mom was taking care of other things. Though I can still attend some of the events scheduled, I had to make sure to go home as early as I can so I could get up early the next day to do my daddy duties. So far, I don't regret every moment being a daddy to Migmig. Though I wish I had more time to do something else XD.

2. Missing-out FHM Autograph Signings: Well, to start with, I missed the autograph signing for March, April, June, July, August, September, November and December. Which means I have just attended the events for January, May and October XD. I'm pretty sure this trend would continue as I have to prioritize other things but it doesn't mean that I support FHM less. It just so happen that I have other more important things to do XD.

3. Getting a formal training in Photography: Well after 2 years of being self-taught and downloaded probably hundreds of files regarding photography, I took the plunge and enrolled under Mr Jo Avila. From there, I learned a lot more aside from joining his activities and meeting new friends. Having a formal photography mentor really helps plus I got to get unlimited coffee everytime I visit his studio. XD

4. Getting swamped with backlogs (blogs and photos): I won't blame it on #1, but I kinda lacked proper time management. There were times that I could have backtracked them but my mind wasn't focused on it. For 2012, I'd make sure to allot an hour or two in a day or in a week to clear-up my list.

5. Losing my CCNA after 3 years: I felt sad when my CCNA license had expired last December 17, 2011 after 3 years. One reason why I did my best to obtain it was to get employed at a certain company but I wasn't even able to get a single interview from their HR. Could it be that their HR who used to work on the company that I am at knows I used t work there? Anyway, it doesn't matter to me anyway. I don't know if I would get myself re-certified or get a different certification but one thing I know is that I'd be in the IT industry for a long time.

6. Joining Foodie Events (Best Food Forward, Ultimate Taste Test 6.0/7.0 and Yummy Eats) and Visiting Mercato Centrale: Since I love eating (see my shape XD), I never let this opportunity slip away from my grasp. Though its really fun trying out new dishes from various vendors, there were times that I wish I took my family with me so they could try it as well.

7. Attending Events for Bloggers: This was a first to me. I used to attend group events but never a bloggers' event. Though most blogger events I have attended were foodie events, I wasn't able to make much friends out of it yet. Its the experience of what its like to be in a bloggers event that I am after. Since my camera (DSLR) died already, it may take a while before I start to attend again these events.

8. Philippine Fashion Week 2011: 2008 was the last time I remember that I have attended PFW. It took me three years to get back in as getting an invite was quite a challenge for me. Plus the fact that I only have a very few to almost no contacts regarding these events, I'd still consider myself lucky. I was invited to not one but three fashion shows that tested my photography skills when it comes to the runway. I am not looking forward to attend this event by force but I'd accept an offer if I'd get invited.

9. The Death of Rebel (My DSLR): After 3 years and 2 months, My camera made its last click during our company's Christmas Party last year. I had it sent to Canon for repair but the cost was too much that it would cost me half of our camera's cost. Right now, I'm using our 4-year old digicam but honestly, my shotswere not as good as the ones I took using Rebel. I hope this year, I would get a replacement somehow.

10.Getting hooked with group-buying sites: I recall last April (or May) that I am really hesitant to do online purchases as some of them were bogus. But after my first purchase at Awesome, Almost all of my online purchase made me really satisfied. Imagine 40-75% discount on food purchases that really made my wife happy as we got to try different restaurants without spending much. There were times that I forgot to use some of the vouchers (which results in wasting money XD), I'd make sure to bookmark my eat-outs with my family to make our experience more memorable.

11. Turning down the offer to travel in Belgium: I have to admit that it took me a while to decide whether I would agree to be sent abroad for training or not. If they have asked me before I renew my contract last September, I could have agreed. However, getting trained abroad means you have to render your service to the company plus, I have already plans of moving somewhere and I don't intend to tell anyone yet where. Our newest colleague will be the one to be sent to Belgium for training. Others think I had let this big opportunity pass. But if I agreed, I may regret it and wallow in agony.

These are some of the things that had significance for me last 2011. You win some, you lose some.

Guys, what are the things that happened to you last 2011 that was memorable to you?

Celebrating World Television Day

 Taken from Google

Today marks the 15th World Television Day as being declared by the United Nations (UN) since 1996. To be honest, I find it ridiculous as to why we have to celebrate this every year as we always get glued to the television for most of the time that we are home. But after reading the news from Manila Bulletin, I came to realize that television is not just a tool for entertainment but to inform and educate as well (Yeah I know =P).

In today's society, television plays a major role in presenting various issues that affect people. In our day to day lives, we are very much dependent on television to get the latest news around the country and around the globe. As these advancements from technology arrives upon us, we have to make sure to utilize them responsibly and inform our today's youth the importance of responsible TV viewing.

To know more about the World Television Day, you may check their facebook account.

Happy Viewing! XD

Too bad I can't join the festivities today since I'm still down with flu.

My plans for 2011

As the year has begun, targets were set and met. Some, didn't. This year, another set of targets to achieve. but before I lay them down, I'll enumerate down the sayings that moved me one way or another.

1. Never be a tourist in your own country "Huwag maging dayuhan sa sariling bayan"
* I've been reading various travel blogs since the start of 2010. I realized there are a lot of places to explore here in our country and I wanted to see all of them before I meet my creator in decades time.

2. Learning by example isn’t the best way to learn–it’s the only way to learn. - Albert Einstein
* I told myself not to stop learning after one company I wanted to work so bad rejected me. This pushed me harder to learn more and not to stop learning until I retire from my chosen career.

3. The day you stop learning is the day you start becoming obsolete.
*This one really moved me the most. One way or another I shouldn't stop learning on the things I want in life as well as the knowledge I want to earn in my lifetime.

4. We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand. - Randy Pausch.
*Its really hard to be contented of what we have. Hence we strive for more to the point of obsession.

And now, here are my goals for 2011.

1. Travel to at least 2 destinations in the Philippines
a. Banaue-Sagada (7D/6N)
b. Vigan-Laoag-Pagudpud or vice-versa (7D/6N)
c. Coron (5D/4N)
d. El Nido (5D/4N)
e. Tagaytay (3D/2N)
f. Pinatubo Trek (Overnight)
g. Bataan-Corregidor (3D/2N)

2. Get 2 to 3 Third Party Lens (Canon counterpart is way expensive =P )
a. Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8
b. Tokina 11-16mm

3. Get serious with Cisco.
*This would be my last year as a CCNA. Unfortunately, I haven't got any job related to it. I will try my best to refresh myself and get a re-certification even if I have to learn version 4.0 as well. Probably this would also be one of the hardest goals to reach since I do get pre-occupied most of the time. XD

4. Get a better paying job.
*I'm still thinking if I would extend my contract with Grow/Greif after September 2011. But who knows, I might get a raise or get promoted. XD

5. Shoot in RAW.
*I mean RAW and NOT in Jpeg except for some special cases. This would help me learn to compose my shot and think a lot of times before pressing the shutter button. Also, I'll try to learn to post process my RAW shots to produce much better pictures.

6. Do Project 52. Either 52 Photowalks or 52 Long Exposures.
*I'm thinking to do all of them depending on the situation.

7. Reinforce Cisco Learning.
*Probably, I'll try to learn A+ or any technology that will help me grow as an IT Professional.

8. Get myself 3 new pairs of shoes and a pair of Havaianas (Testing XD).
* A pair of Sanuk
* A pair of Merrell
* A pair of Adidas

9. Get myself 2 pairs of maong pants and 2 pairs of khakis as well as 3 pairs of walking shorts (combination of maong and the ones with pockets).
*My old shorts/maong pants are more than 3 years old and I need to have them replaced and donate the old ones. XD

10. Have my eyes checked and upgrade my eyeglasses.
*I haven't been to an optometrist/ophthalmologist in the past 2-4 years which I think I have to make this one of my priorities.

11. Check-in to at least 2-5 Five-Star Hotels in Manila
a. Diamond Hotel
b. Manila Hotel
c. Sofitel
d. Cantury Hotel
e. Edsa Shangri-La Hotel
f. Ascott Hotel

12. Save enough money for my wife's operation (giving birth) as well as for my future job hunting.
*I am slowly realizing the challenges of being a breadwinner.

13. Enroll in a Photography Class (Basic and Advanced).
*After being into Photography for more than 2 years, I think it is time for me to take some formal lessons so that I would be guided on getting better pictures as well as meet fellow photographers who also thirst for learning aside from myself. The question here would be which is the best photography school to go to. I have three choices
a. Under FPPF Group
b. Under Jo Avila Photography
c. Under Imagine Nation Photography

14. Join Photo Contests.
*After joining 2 to 4 contests last year, I'll be more active in participating these kind of events to enhance my skills in photography more as well as gain more experience.

15. Finish my Backlogs.
*I have more than 40 sets of pictures to edit and 30 entries to publish here in my blog. probably I have to think of something and allot some time to complete those. XD

16. Watch my weight.
*This has been the biggest struggle of my life. Year after year I made promises to trim down to at least 175 pounds to no avail. Probably, I'd be watching my weight and look for ways to keep it or better yet, reduce it.

17. Renew my Passport and PRC License. Get an SSS ID and other Government issued IDs.
*So far what I have is a Postal ID, Baranggay ID and my Company ID. Some of my IDs have already expired, thus the need to renew/apply. XD

I'll try to update this once in a while and post an update every end of the quarter. I hope I could accomplish all of them and worst comes to worse, at least one will do. XD
